Have you ever wondered what it would be like to change up your life, continue using your skills and talents, and earn from anywhere in the world, even in your 60s?
At 60, my husband and I transitioned into the digital nomad lifestyle. It was liberating but also came with challenges we hadn’t fully anticipated. After spending three years in Costa Rica, we are preparing to move to Spain, continuing our adventure of living and earning in places we’ve wanted to explore. The journey has been nothing short of transformative but hasn’t always been easy. Here’s what I’ve learned and tips to thrive through transitions.
THE TOP THREE CHALLENGES WE FACED
Navigating Cultural Differences: Moving to a new country meant adapting to unfamiliar customs and ways of life, which required openness, empathy, and the realization that how we do life is just that—how we do life, and it has nothing to do with how others in the world live theirs. Mind-blowing, humbling, and empowering!
Getting Comfortable with Discomfort: Embracing everything new, from language and customs to the monetary system, was essential. We learned to thrive outside our comfort zone by adjusting to new environments and dealing with uncertainty.
Managing the Emotional Impact of Change: Leaving behind familiar places, relationships, and comforts can bring about feelings of uncertainty. Learning how to manage these emotions—remembering our purpose and staying present in the moment—is crucial for maintaining mental well-being.
TIPS FOR THRIVING THROUGH TRANSITION
Flowing with Change: Transitioning to a nomadic lifestyle requires a mindset shift, as with any life change. Plans will change, and not everything will go smoothly. Again, like anything in life. Being flexible in how you approach your day-to-day life will reduce stress and help you adapt faster. This is very true even if you’re not living abroad.
Building Connections: Transitioning to a new place can sometimes feel isolating, but it’s also an opportunity to create new relationships. Building connections with others through mutual interests, situations, and like-mindedness is priceless in life. Be proactive in meeting new people through local groups, activities, or online communities. Building a support system can help you feel more grounded and part of your new environment.
Embracing Learning: Every new place (in life) brings learning opportunities, whether a new language or a new way of living. Approach the unfamiliar with curiosity and excitement, and it will transform any challenge into an opportunity for growth. Each new challenge has been a chance to redefine ourselves, embrace the unknown, and thrive. As we continue our journey, it’s become clear that thriving isn’t just about where we are but also about how we approach change.
A FINAL THOUGHT
In the end, thriving through transition is all about perspective. Whether moving abroad or simply navigating a transition in life, embracing the unknown can lead to incredible personal growth. At any age, we can redefine what it means to live fully, challenge ourselves, and find joy in the journey. So, whether you’re 60 or beyond, know it’s never too late to look fear straight on, take a step forward, and thrive through change.
